Eight signed for Titans practice squad

August 31, 2008

The Titans have signed eight players to their practice squad, reports ESPN’s Paul Kuharsky. The names are familiar:
WR Biren Ealy
DB Tuff Harris
DT Antonio Johnson
QB Ingle Martin
OL Jason Murphy
TE Jamie Petrowski
OL Fernando Velasco
CB Cary Williams
I’m mildly surprised they didn’t sign Marquice Cole or Tony Joiner.
No word yet on any waiver wire pickups.

Which Titan will be cut next?

August 31, 2008

We now have our “final” 53-man roster, at least for a few hours. The Titans have traditionally picked up a guy or two off the waiver wire the day after final cutdowns. The players they pick up don’t usually make much of a contribution, if any, but occasionally they get a good one, such as Eric King two years ago.
Earlier this morning, Drexel looked at some players who the Titans might pick up.
Here’s what I’m wondering. If the Titans get one player off the waiver wire, who gets cut to make room for him? Who’s the second guy who will get the axe if the Titans pick up two new players? (more…)

Is the Titan 53-man roster set in stone?

August 31, 2008

And then there were 53.
The Titan roster now consists of the aforementioned number of players, due to yesterday’s final cuts.
Of course, with the rest of the league jettisoning players as well, the Titans could view other teams’ losses as potential gains over the course of the next couple of days.

Titans make cuts to reach 53-man limit

August 30, 2008

As the website maintenance planned for this weekend is currently on postponement, it’s time to put up a post here on the roster cuts.
The Titans have released 22 players, 13 yesterday and 9 more today, to reach the mandatory 53-man roster limit. A full list of cuts, along with analysis, follows after the cut:

Total Titans news and weekend schedule

August 29, 2008

Total Titans will be moving temporarily for the weekend, over to Residual Prolixity, Tom’s other blog. Our current site here will be down for maintenance from approximately 8 AM CT Saturday until 5 AM Tuesday while our webmaster is getting us set up for what is promised to be a better platform.
We’ll have some things to say about the roster cutdown Saturday and then look at any waiver wire pickups on Sunday as well as the formation of the practice squad. We hope you will join us and participate in the discussions. We look forward to it.
I hope you all have a great and a safe Labor Day weekend. We’ll look forward to seeing you back here Tuesday.

Some thoughts on Titans 23-21 victory

August 28, 2008

The preseason came to an end tonight as the Titans held on to a 23-21 victory over the Packers.
As Andrew predicted earlier, most of the game consisted of the Titans’ better players playing against Green Bay’s scrubs, so that must be taken into consideration when evaluating team/individual performances.
Here are my thoughts on tonight’s contest.

Titans at Green Bay gameday

Tulloch starting for Bulluck tonight, Allred for Thornton.
Stewart, Harper and Carr are questionable. Bironas, Hawkins and C. Williams are out.

The 53-man on the eve of the last preseason game

August 28, 2008

As we look forward to Thursday’s fourth and final preseason game against the Packers, the most important thing to keep in mind is that 22 players currently on the Titans’ roster won’t be there in 3 days’ time. It’s likely the coaches are already almost certain who will stay and who will meet the Turk before Saturday’s deadline.

Chris Henry: The forgotten RB

August 27, 2008

Where have you gone, Chris Henry?
Yesterday, when asked about how the carries will be split in the rushing attack this season, Jeff Fisher gave the following response:

“We’re going to use them both (Chris Johnson/LenDale White) depending on the game plans and it makes sense to take advantage of both of their abilities…Provided they’re healthy week in and week out I would assume it would be close to 50-50, maybe 60-40.”

With Johnson and White virtually splitting carries, Chris Henry appears to be on the outside looking in when it comes to the running game in 2008.

Which WRs will make the Titans roster?

August 26, 2008

I heard an interesting comment last week from Terry McCormick, the Titans beat writer for The [Nashville] City Paper. It wouldn’t surprise him if the Titans keep only five receivers when they cut down to a 53-man roster on Saturday.
The reasoning is that Mike Heimerdinger will only be using four WRs. The fifth one would be inactive on gamedays and only be activated for those games in which another receiver can’t go. No reason to waste an extra roster spot or two on guys who won’t see the field.
