Total Titans selects an All-AFC South team

Total Titans is getting ready to do season previews on Tennessee’s AFC South opponents. We’ll try to place a special emphasis on how changes on those teams may affect the Titans.
Before doing that, I thought it would be a fun exercise to look at the best players in the division and select an All-AFC South team.
Following are the picks I made:
QB — Peyton Manning, Colts
RB — Joseph Addai, Colts
FB — Greg Jones, Jaguars
WR — Reggie Wayne, Colts
WR — Andre Johnson, Texans
TE — Dallas Clark, Colts
LT — Michael Roos, Titans

C — Jeff Saturday, Colts
RG — Vince Manuwai, Jaguars
RT — Ryan Diem, Colts
DE — Kyle Vanden Bosch, Titans
DE — Mario Williams, Texans

    Kevin Mawae-C
    David Thronton-LOB
    Chris Hope-SS
    David Stewart-RT
    Fred Taylor-RB Jags
I may be a little biased, but I truly believe these guys are better than the guys you picked, That, of course, is a matter of opinion.

  2. Tom Gower Says:

I mostly really like the picks, Andrew. I don’t really like Diem that much, though-I’d lean Stewart at this point. RB is a tough call-Addai’s a perfect fit for the Colts, but I don’t think he’d be quite as effective in another scheme. I’d take a healthy Fred Taylor over him.
On the defense, I don’t think there’s a particularly good choice at #2 CB behind Mathis. If Fred Bennett plays this year like he did last year, he’ll be it. I also don’t really like any of the OLBs other than Bulluck. If I can cheat and pick another Will instead of a Sam, I’ll take Freddy Keiaho, who really impressed me last year. Also, Reggie Nelson will probably the FS for the next 6 years-that guy will be scary good.
On ST, I think Hentrich’s probably in his last couple years, but I don’t see another guy I have to pick instead.
Dave, Mawae may be the 3rd best center in the division. No disrespect, as Saturday may be the best in the league and Meester is danged good as well. And, while I love Hope, you can’t ignore the impact Sanders has on the Colts defense.

  3. Tom Gower Says:

Carr’s a pretty good kickoff returner, but he’s not as good as Davis, who’s probably #3 in the league behind Cribbs and Hester. But, he’s hasn’t been a particularly good punt returner, and the Titans haven’t been the Bears when it comes to making holes for punt returners. No great choices, but Rushing’s probably the best IMO.

  4. Bradd Says:

    greg jones over Ahmad Hall?
well, not after this year, you won’t.
    Addai over Jones-Drew?
not any easy debate, but definately arguable.

  5. Andrew Strickert Says:

Some of these picks are very subjective and I would have been surprised if I didn’t get any disagreement.
Dave, my pick of Sanders seemed to be a no-brainer. He’s an impact player, a superstar. Hope isn’t and probably never will be. The RB pick was tougher and if longevity was the main factor, Taylor would get the nod. Addai may be a “system player” but you can’t fault him for being in a situation where his abilities are well utilized.
Tom, I agree with you about a Will. There’s not one that really stands out. Also agree about a second CB. If Dunta Robinson was healthy, I’d take him, but he’ll start the year on PUP and no telling if he’ll be effective when he does get back on the field.
Bradd, I selected Jones because he’s more athletic and a better runner than Hall when he does run. I can’t say he’s a better blocker, though. If I had picked MJD for my team, it would have been as a KR, not a RB.
    Thanks for your input, guys.

  6. David H. Says:

Andrew, Where is Chris Carr? Isn’t he like the Raiders all time Return Man? I think he could easliy be the most consistent returner out of all 4 teams in our divison. I also agree with the other DAVE in starting David Thorton at LOLB. We have the best outside linbacking tandem in the divison respectivley.

  7. Dave Says:

You’re right about Bob Sanders being a huge impact, but I’ll take the Titans starting safeties over any other starters in the AFC South……

  8. Dave Says:

Tennesse…number 5 in rushing last year, the Colts were 18th….that speaks volumes for the offensive line and therefore I will have to override any lineman chosen that’s not a Titan…..thank you, good night….haha

  9. james Says:

    Dwight Freeney

  10. Dan Says:

I agree with most of your picks.
Dave, the Titans ranked higher in rushing for reasons other than just having a good line. The colts, have Peyton Manning throwing the ball to Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Antonio Gonzalez and on and on. I would pass the ball more often than run it leading to a lower rushing total. The Titan’s are fifth in running because that was their main way of moving the ball.
At free safety Reggie Nelson or even Michael Griffin would be an upgrade.
