Tennessee Titans offseason positional analysis: Defensive end

Continuing our offseason positional analyses, we now take a look at the defensive ends. The Titans started the 2009 season with five DEs and finished with six on the roster. Three of the six are free agents who will more than likely not be back in two-tone blue this season and another is an untested commodity.

That leaves only two who are certain to be on the roster in September so this position group should have more turnover than any other for the Titans this offseason.

Here’s a look at the status of the defensive ends, after the jump. (more…)

Happy trails, KVB?

February 1, 2010

In preparation for his participation in last night’s Pro Bowl, veteran DE Kyle Vanden Bosch informed the media about his belief regarding his days as a Tennessee Titan coming to end.

KVB, who will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, has not been approached with an offer to stay and he’s preparing to extend his career in another NFL city in 2010.

Is letting KVB depart via the waters of free agency a good or bad decision by the Titans? (more…)

Jevon Kearse, thanks for the memories

January 23, 2010

Of all the Titans whose contracts are expiring, Jevon Kearse is the one most certain not to return for another season in two-tone blue.

He’s just finished the worst season of his 11-year NFL career, has to recuperate from knee surgery and will be 34 years old when the season starts in September.

It could very well be his final year in the league as well but don’t feel sorry for The Freak. He’s had a spectacular (at least his first three seasons) and lucrative career. (more…)

Defensive End: The Tennessee Titans’ biggest draft need?

January 19, 2010

Depending on the outcome of a coin flip, the Tennessee Titans will be on the clock with the 16th or 17th pick in April’s 2010 NFL Draft.

According to early mock drafters, the Titans would be wise to invest in the defensive end position with their first pick. Considering the questionable returns of veterans Kyle Vanden Bosch and Jevon Kearse and a decrease in sack production last year, draft prognosticators, at least in the early going of the process that culminates in April, are convinced that DE is the way to go with the Titans’ first selection. The Tennessee Titans’ 2009 report card: Defense

January 14, 2010

It’s good to see many of you have followed us here on our new temporary home. Thanks for being with us.

We looked at the report card for the offense the other day and will now turn to the defense.

As before, I’ve arranged the grades by position group, with a sentence or two about each player after their grades. Only the players who had significant playing time are graded here. Also, please note that these grades reflect only their performance on defense; any special teams play is not considered here.

As you might expect from a defense which had a poor year, many of their grades are not pretty. (more…)

2009 Tennessee Titans: Biggest disappointments

January 13, 2010

In part I of this two-article series, I took a look at the Tennessee Titans’ surprise performers of 2009. The comeback kid a.k.a Vince Young and rookies such as Kenny Britt and Gerald McRath headlined the list of guys who came out of the blue to emerge as viable contributors last season.

As promised, today’s post will focus upon the players who, in my opinion, earned the dubious distinction as the team’s biggest disappointments due to their less than stellar performances in ’09. (more…)

The complete injury report for the Titans-49ers game is now available. The biggest concern is obviously RT David Stewart.

Javon Ringer, Back, Out
Jevon Kearse, Knee, Questionable
Mike Otto, Knee, Questionable
David Stewart, Hamstring, Questionable
David Thornton, Hip, Questionable
Vincent Fuller, Groin, Questionable
Nicholas Harper, Forearm, Questionable

If Stewart is unable to play, or has to be replaced, we might get to see rookie Troy Kropog fill in. (Mike Otto, the other backup tackle, has been missing practice with a knee problem and is also listed as Questionable on the injury report.)

Titans who may not be back in 2010

October 29, 2009

There should be a poll up about the decision today naming VY as the starter. This post would’ve been written earlier but for technical difficulties-I’m not trying to ignore the latest news.

Two months ago, looking ahead, the question that would have seemed to be facing the Titans in the 2010 offseason would be whether or not the Titans would have a realistic shot at seriously competing for a Super Bowl berth in 2010 and which veterans should be retained for another year. As we look toward Week 8 of the 2009 season, though, it’s depressingly apparent that that open window mostly closed in the recent offseason.

With the window mostly shut, the decision as to which players might be retained changed a little. So, which Titans could be looking at playing elsewhere in 2010?
