According to multiple media reports, DeAngelo Hall is on the verge of being traded from the Falcons to the Raiders in exchange for a second round draft pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Hall, a two-time Pro Bowler who became a disgruntled Falcon during their nightmarish 2007 campaign, joins current Titan Alge Crumpler as the latest Atlanta veteran to depart the nest.
The Titans have their own young and talented corner that may be available via trade this offseason. The plight of Adam “PacMan” Jones is well-documented and as a result of his actions, the chances of him being a Tennessee Titan next year and beyond are somewhere between slim and none.
In light of the seemingly inevitable DeAngelo Hall trade, what can the Titans expect in return if they decide to trade their troubled but gifted corner?

The door hits Chris Brown in the ass

March 15, 2008

You can’t blame a man for trying to make a buck.
Nobody else in the NFL wanted Chris Brown, so when the Houston Texans signed Titans’ castoff Chris Brown, he and his agent were more than happy to take their money. It’s nice to know that a divisional rival’s new GM is foolish enough to make unwise decisions like his predecessor. All of a sudden, I don’t miss Charley Casserly quite as much.
I used to like Brown, but it’s been quite a few years since he’s given me much to like, other than the season opener last year.

Frank Wycheck: Titans should draft a RB in first round

March 14, 2008

In the NFL Network series, Path to the Draft, former Titan great and current analyst Frank Wycheck weighed in with his thoughts on what the Titans should do with their first round draft pick.
Contrary to the opinions of many, including yours truly, who believe that the Titans should take a wide receiver in the first round, Wycheck thinks that a running back should be chosen.

Mike Reinfeldt is OK with me

March 13, 2008

It was easy for Titans fans to be upset with new GM Mike Reinfeldt a year ago and I was front and center among those voicing their displeasure.
The new GM had the temerity to place “dollar values” on players, as if calculating their worth as assets on a balance sheet. I was critical when the Titans lost their leading rusher and two leading receivers in free agency because other teams made better offers to them.
Hindsight shows that Reinfeldt was right, at least in the short-term, which was the 2007 season. Travis Henry, Drew Bennett and Bobby Wade posted less than impressive stats last year and the teams who paid big bucks to them certainly got much less than they bargained for.

Titans continue reunion, bring back McCareins

March 12, 2008

Continuing the trend that started with the return of Jevon Kearse, the Titans brought back another former successful former player, signing WR Justin McCareins to a one-year contract.
McCareins was originally a fourth-round pick by the Titans in 2001 and spent his first three years in Nashville before going to the Jets in a trade as a restricted free agent. Alas for Jets fans, he was generally less successful for Mike Heimerdinger there than in Tennessee and fell even further out of favor after Dinger’s departure. Of course, a 42% catch rate like he had in 2005 and 2007 probably wouldn’t endear much of anyone to anybody (admittedly, ,2006 was better).
Per the Tennessean, McCareins’ deal is for a mere one year, about a million total. I guess McCareins will fill the role played this past year of Eric Moulds, receiver who’s been in the league more than five years who probably won’t do that much.

Total Titans select WR Limas Sweed in Mock Draft

March 11, 2008

Recently, Total Titans was asked to participate in an NFL mock draft at Sportprojections.com that consists of the opinions of bloggers who write about their respective teams.
The mock draft is still a work in progress as the bottom-tier of the first round make their selections. I made the Titan selection at pick #24 earlier this evening. As the title of this article indicates, I chose Limas Sweed as the guy who will be picked in the first round by the Titans.
Here is the write-up:

Titans agree to terms with G Jake Scott

March 10, 2008

I like the news that the Titans have agreed to terms with Jake Scott. He’s one of the guys I mentioned favorably in my offseason positional review of the guards.
Scott should make a good replacement for Jacob Bell at left guard. It’s also good to see the Colts lose another player, as Drexel noted in this article, where he also noted Scott as a possible replacement for Bell.

Seattle RB logjam: Possible replacement for Chris Brown?

March 9, 2008

A ton of focus has been devoted to obvious Titan needs, such as upgrading the wide receiver position, replenishing the DE spot and bringing in veteran help at guard.
In Tom’s Reading the Tea Leaves post, Titan GM Mike Reinfeldt talks about the desire to add a running back via free agency, presumably to replace Mr. Fragility himself, Chris Brown. As recently as last week, free agent RB Julius Jones made a visit to Nashville. However, Jones decided to go northwest, signing a multi-year deal with Seattle.
Jones’ decision to sign with the Seahawks creates a logjam at their running back position. Jones and fellow free agent signee T.J. Duckett have joined incumbents Shaun Alexander and Maurice Morris in a crowded Seattle backfield.
Considering the Titans’ desire to add a running back and Reinfeldt’s history with Seattle, could Shaun Alexander or Maurice Morris be a possible addition if the Seahawks decide to part ways with either of the veterans?

Reading the Tea Leaves: Insight from GM Mike Reinfeldt

March 8, 2008

Floyd Reese was GM of the Oilers/Titans for over a dozen years. Like him or not (I did, mostly), respect him or not (I did), by the end of his tenure, he was relatively easy to predict. Mike Reinfeldt has less of a track record as the final decision-maker, so what the Titans would do entering free agency was more of a question mark. We’ve seen some partial results from that already, and there’s even more to write about. Specifically, the man himself gave a talk this past week to the Nashville Rotary Club, and a transcript of his comments was posted on the official site. I recommend you read it in full, because it’s incredibly enlightening and a rare glimpse into the normally closed world of “what an NFL GM is thinking.” What follows are my thoughts on some of his more interesting points.

Guest commentary on Alge Crumpler

March 7, 2008

I have some very strong and mixed emotions about the addition of Alge Crumpler and I asked for some insight.
We’re fortunate to have opinions I solicited from two friends who happen to write here on MVN’s Atlanta Falcons site, Flying High.
Chase Kuech emailed me saying,

To me, Alge Crumpler is a lot like Josh Smith, the Atlanta Hawks forward. There are times when Crumpler makes plays that you can’t even believe. He looks like an All Star at times and you wonder why he isn’t the type of tight end that Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez are. (more…)
